Avidemux System Requirements (Windows, macOS, Linux)

Avidemux system requirements are not published by the project as an authoritative spec table, so the requirements below are practical recommendations based on community experience — not an official statement. This guide covers Windows, macOS and Linux: minimum hardware, operating system versions, and what to upgrade if you edit HD or 4K footage.

Note: Avidemux is a lightweight editor — basic cutting of HD video works on modest machines. But 4K editing and AV1 encoding need substantially more CPU and GPU power, and much more RAM.

GPU acceleration notes

Avidemux does not require a dedicated GPU. Some builds offer hardware encoding or decoding via NVENC (NVIDIA), DXVA2 (Windows) or VideoToolbox (macOS), but availability depends on how the specific binary was compiled. If hardware acceleration matters to you, verify that the build you use supports it.

Older hardware and operating systems

If your machine runs Windows 7 or another retired OS, the current stable release (v2.8.1) may not install. You can find older Avidemux releases that still work on legacy systems on our old versions page.

Keep in mind: because Avidemux ships many builds from different sources, actual behavior can vary slightly between builds. The table above reflects what users commonly report as working.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4 GB of RAM enough for Avidemux?

For simple cutting and basic filtering of HD video, yes — 4 GB is the practical minimum reported by users. For 4K projects or heavy filter chains, 8 GB or more is strongly recommended.

Does Avidemux need a GPU?

No. Avidemux runs fine on integrated graphics. A GPU only helps if your build supports hardware acceleration such as NVENC, DXVA2 or VideoToolbox — and even then it is optional.

Will Avidemux run on Windows 7?

Not reliably with current builds, which target Windows 10/11 64-bit. Check the old versions page for legacy releases that work on older Windows versions.

Why is there no official spec table?

The Avidemux project does not publish an authoritative hardware spec table, so any requirements you see online are recommendations drawn from user experience — which is exactly how the table above is presented here.
