Install Avidemux on Ubuntu (24.04, 22.04 & Linux Mint)

Installing Avidemux on Ubuntu is straightforward: add the community-maintained xtradeb/apps PPA for a system-integrated install with automatic updates, or use the official AppImage for a portable install that works on any Ubuntu release. This guide covers Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble), 22.04 (Jammy), and Linux Mint — pick the method that fits your setup.

Avidemux.net is an independent community resource site — not the official Avidemux project (avidemux.org, GitHub mean00/avidemux2). Version facts: v2.8.1 (2022) is the latest stable release; v2.8.2 is the development/nightly line, not stable.

Method 1: xtradeb/apps PPA (recommended)

For a classic install that updates with the rest of your system, the community-maintained xtradeb/apps PPA ships Avidemux for Ubuntu and derivatives:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xtradeb/apps
sudo apt update
sudo apt install avidemux-qt

Third-party PPA. xtradeb/apps is a community package archive, not the official Avidemux project. PPAs install with root privileges — only add ones you trust.

Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble) note

PPA support follows the maintainer, not Ubuntu’s release calendar. Before adding the PPA on 24.04, open the xtradeb/apps Launchpad page and confirm a Noble build exists. If your release isn’t listed, don’t force it — use the AppImage below. On 24.04, sudo apt install pulls the needed Qt libraries automatically in most cases; if the GUI fails to start with a Qt platform plugin error, the AppImage (which bundles its own Qt) sidesteps the problem entirely.

Method 2: AppImage (works on every release)

The official AppImage needs no installation and no repository changes:

chmod +x Avidemux*.AppImage
./Avidemux*.AppImage

Download it from our download page (site mirror) or the official nightly page. This is the safest choice on 24.04 if the PPA has no Noble build yet.

Method 3: Flatpak from Flathub

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub org.avidemux.Avidemux

The Flathub Flatpak is community-maintained and updates automatically with flatpak update.

Linux Mint

Linux Mint is Ubuntu-based, so the same PPA instructions apply — just make sure the PPA has a build matching your Mint’s Ubuntu base (Jammy for Mint 21, Noble for Mint 22). The AppImage and Flatpak methods work on Mint with no changes at all.

On other distros?

See our Linux install guide for Arch (AUR), Fedora, Debian, and Wayland notes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to install Avidemux on Ubuntu?

The xtradeb/apps PPA: three commands and you get a system-integrated install that updates with apt upgrade. If the PPA lacks your Ubuntu release, the AppImage is the zero-friction fallback.

The PPA has no Ubuntu 24.04 build — what now?

Use the official AppImage or the Flathub Flatpak. Don’t force a PPA built for another release; mismatched Qt libraries are the most common cause of a GUI that won’t start.

Do the same steps work on Linux Mint?

Yes. Mint 21/22 are Ubuntu-based, so the PPA, AppImage, and Flatpak methods all apply — match the PPA build to your Mint’s Ubuntu base (Jammy/Noble).

Is there an official Snap or Ubuntu repository package?

No. The official project distributes the AppImage and nightly builds; Ubuntu’s default archives don’t ship Avidemux on current releases, and there is no official Snap.
